Types of Commuting Bikes
There are basically two types of bikes people most often use for commuting:

Mountain Bike
The mountain bike can be an excellent commuting bike, especially if you aren't doing long distance commuting. It's obviously quite rugged, and may have shock absorbers to smooth out the bumps. The tires are wide and knobby; not prone to getting a flat.IcanCycling 29+ Carbon Frame Mtn Bike

Hybrid Bike
The hybrid bike is a cross between a road bike, and a mountain bike. It has heavier tires than a road bike, and is more rugged, but is lighter and easier to pedal than a mountain bike.
The hybrid bike is the more popular style for commuting, as it's a little easier to ride, a little more comfortable, and is usually cheaper. What you choose is strictly a matter of preference, and if your commute is more that a couple of miles, or has some big hills, I would definitely consider an electric bike as well.

Arkel Signature V Urban PannierPacks and Panniers
Unless your commute is in Southern California,
there are going to be times when it would be
nice to have either a pack, or panniers(saddlebags).
to put your work clothes in during inclement weather
conditions. The pannier shown is made for
commuting; it’s a single bag that can be removed
at your destination. If you park your bike outside
all day, it’s a good idea to remove your pack or
pannier, so it doesn’t walk off on it’s own.

The commuter pack is another good option, ifArkel Bug Pannier Backpack
you don’t mind riding with a pack on your back.
The advantage is you don’t need to buy a rack
for your bike, and you can use it with any bike.
Some of the commuter packs, like the one shown
have a laptop computer pocket as well.
